Mascagni - Cavalleria Rusticana & Leoncavallo - Pagliacci - Caballé, Carreras, Scotto, Muti

Review:

Muti's recording of the Cavalleria Rusicana, Pagliacci is one of the very best. Carreras is most impassioned, singing both tenor roles. He is in gorgeous voice here - one of his very greatest recordings. Caballe is exquisite, if a little detached dramatically, as Santuzza. Still, a vocally sumptuous reading. Scotto, on the other hand is completely on fire as Nedda! Her upper register is not always as secure as Caballe's, but she has the verismo style in her voice like few other modern sopranos. Muti conducts a taut, intense reading and the recorded sound is exceptional. Don't miss this one...
